Round sardinella (Sardinella aurita)

Fish of the Sardinella genus of the Dorosomatinae subfamily of the Clupeidae family of the Clupeiformes order of the Clupeomorpha superorder.

Round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) was first described in 1847 by the French zoologist and ichthyologist Achille Valenciennes (1794 – 1865).

It is a pelagic schooling fish inhabiting the depths up to 350 meters. The maximum recorded length is 30 cm; specimens up to 25 cm long are more common. The maximum weight is 230 grams. It mainly feeds on zooplankton.

It is a permanent inhabitant of the Adriatic Sea. It is an important target of commercial fishing.
