    ABOUT DISTRICT COURT

    The word ‘Azamgarh’ has been derived from two words ‘Azam’ and ‘Garh’. The word ‘Azam’ connotes the name of the founder Raja (king) of the city, Azam Khan and the word ‘Garh’ means a Fort or a Castle. One of his decedents Vikarmajeet embraced Islam, and had two sons named Azam Khan and Azmat Khan. Azam Khan laid down the foundation of Azamgarh after his name. Azamgarh is situated on the bank of Tamsa River (Tons).

    Azamgarh was established in 1665 during the Mughal period. On 18th December, 1832 it became a District and Sir Thomson was appointed the first Collector of the newly created District “Azamgarh”. The British had two base camps; firstly, Diwani Court and secondly was Wesley School. In 1832, the civil court was built on place of the ancestral house and stables of Sidhari ke Babu. In the beginning the Civil Courts were administering justice under the control and supervision of the District Judge of Varanasi. In 1856-57 a District Judge in Azamgarh was appointed. On 15th November, 1994 Azamgarh became a Commissionary. It consists of the districts Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia.
