History of Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple

Mathura is a sacred place. Mathura is also an important pilgrimage place for Vaishanava. The Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple was initially constructed by Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Sri Krishna. The temple was invaded many times. The Temple is re-constructed by King Vikramaditya. According, to some sources the temple is rebuilt about 17 times.

The Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi is adjacent to a mosque and history says that the Mughals built the mosque destroying an existing temple there. Today, this is one of the most frequently visited destinations by Hindus.

• Janmashtami – Janmashtami is the birthday of Sri Krishna. • Holi – Holi is among the most popular festival of Mathura. The festival is celebrated in a traditional and different way in Brij. The festival lasts for several days and begins from Phalgun Amasavi and it gains peaks on Ekadashi. Special dramas and singing undergo during this period.
• Basant Panchami – The idols of Krishna is dressed in yellow and with special ornaments. A special Bhog of kheer stuff with saffron and rice is offered in all the temples of Mathura.
• Deepavali – Deepavali is the most famous festival of Mathura. Deepavali is celebrated with great colours, lights, and special materials. Special prayers are carried out with people of the place distributing sweets.
• Sharad Purnima – Raas Leela is performing in the temple on this day. It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Lunar month of Ashwin which tends to end the monsoon season.
• Radha Ashtami – This is celebrated as the Birth of Radha. Several devotional songs and programs are played during this period. Radha Krishna’s songs are very famous during this period.
