Lady Bird star Saoirse Ronan will be playing a teacher in a new satirical comedy.

As reported by Deadline, the four-time Academy Award nominee will be starring in a new thriller-esque film, titled Bad Apples. Based on Rasmus Lindgren's bestselling debut novel De Oönskade, the adaptation will tell the story of a primary school teacher who makes a questionable choice regarding one of her pupils.

The blockbuster will mark the English language feature debut of Swedish director Jonatan Etzler and is written by Jess O'Kane. Production is aimed to start in spring 2024 under an Equity contract, amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

"The film tells the story of Maria (Ronan), a primary school teacher doing her best to inspire a class of 10-year-olds but unable to because of one unruly and chaotic student. With her career in question and the child's behaviour spiralling, she makes a series of bad decisions that lead to her accidentally taking and locking this 'bad apple' in her home," reads the official logline for the film.

It concludes: "Maria tries desperately to backtrack, but when the class starts flourishing and the staff and parents are thrilled with the improvement, she finds herself in a very complicated predicament".

Oskar Pimlott, who is producing the movie on behalf of production company Pulse Films, shared his excitement at collaborating with Etzler and Ronan.

"Jonatan has an unparalleled ability to create hilarious and horrifying cinema from the uncomfortable truths of human nature. We couldn't be more excited that his unique perspective is going to collide with the extraordinary depth and talent of Saoirse Ronan in this special film," he said.

Ronan is currently starring alongside Normal People's Paul Mescal in the new sci-fi romance Foe, which was released in selected cinemas on October 20. The pair play a married couple who live on an isolated farm in 2065, before their lives are turned upside down when a stranger arrives with unexpected news.

The film has been met with mixed reviews from critics, resulting in a low score of just 23% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.

Bad Apples doesn't have a release date yet.
