Pudu Wet Market.. Siew Yoke, Charsiew Haven!

It’s no secret that we’re pretty much crazy about good Siew Yoke.

And trust me .. KL has tons of it.. you just need to know where to look for it.

So Cumi walking around Pudu Wet Market one weekend, found this old stall, in the market square, that did not have a name.

Even the proprietor muttered when asked… “this is the Pudu Market Siew Yoke place la – no name!”

It’s located just next to Kedai Emas Loong Hong, if that’s any help at all.

And by golly, the food here is good. From Pak Cham Kai (poached chicken) to the Roast duck, Char Siew (BBQ Pork) and of course, the piece-de-resistance, the Siew Yoke (roast pork), this place is the bomb!

The soup they serve is also flavourful and has a nice herbal taste to it.

Smooth white chicken.. some prefer this to the roasted version – I like both forms equally much.

The duck is a must order. The brown sauce it’s served in is just deliciously fragrant with duck fat and juices.

Though there was a fair amount of folks eating here, we didn’t have to wait long. Service was super prompt.

Biting into the Siew Yoke can reduce a grown man to tears. Man I tell you the skin is just gorgeous. A crisp, well browned but not burnt layer of crunchy skin .. and the most white juicy pork meat in the world – not a trace of gaminess, just enough soft fat, but mostly thick sweet lean pork meat!

Wow, I was amazed at the succulence of its densely packed flesh. Being used to more fat, I had to marvel at how fabulously tasty it was, even without much fat.

But there was more fabulousness to come.. this duck – recommend meat close to the rib or even breast meat – it’s so plump and juicy, it could have been the thigh.. but the skin here is exceptionally crispy too.

And their Char Siew -ah.. caramalized, crusty, sticky-gooey and fatty at the core of it all. Resistance is futile – just eat it all!

The rice here is less oily and I love the young ginger that’s buried inside – a bonus if you like.

Pudu Wet Market .. some find the place just too busy, noisy and dirty.. but this is where the pulse of the city lies. Wear your flip flops, not your latest louboutin’s, catch my drift. If you want to shop for the best, freshest produce then arrive early to experience KL’s largest wet market at its most frantic. Here you can get every imaginable type of fruit, vegetable, fish and meat – from the chicken feet, fish fillets to even a pig’s snout.. it’s all good.

And don’t forget to check this place out for lunch – one of the best Roasted Pork and BBQ Pork rice ever that KL has to offer, and it’s affordable too (RM6-7 a plate).
