Distributed in subtropical to tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Inhabits coral rubble and sandy areas of coral reefs and the coast. Its tail does not contain any poisonous spines, but like a porcupine it has small thorns that cover the surface of its body. At one time, the skin of this species was processed to make grips for Japanese swords.
