Bengaluru: Nirmala, Jairam, Oscar, Ramamurthy win from Karnataka

Bengaluru, Jun 11 (IANS) : The ruling Congress on Saturday won three seats and the opposition BJP one seat in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.

The winners are Oscar Fernandes, Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Ramamurthy (all Congress) and Union Minister for commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman of the BJP.

Nirmala Sitharaman and K C Ramamurthy

Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) candidate B.M. Farooq failed to get the required votes to win the contest for the third seat, as seven of its 40 lawmakers in the state legislative assembly 'cross voted' in favour of Ramamurthy, defying the party's whip.

Fernandes and Ramesh got 46 votes each, while Ramamurthy secured 52, and Sitharaman bagged 47.

Farooq had to be contended with just 33 votes.

As the ruling party (Congress) has 123 lawmakers in the 225-member assembly, election of Fernandes and Ramesh was a fait accompli, while Ramamurthy required at least 14 more votes in addition to the 31 surplus votes as the two former central ministers bagged 46 votes each.

With seven JD-S rebel lawmakers, nine independents and five members from regional outfits voting for Ramamurthy, he secured seven more (52) than the minimum 45 votes required to win the seat.

Though the BJP has 44 lawmakers in the assembly, Sitharaman secured three more votes from members of the regional outfits BSR-C and KJP.

In the 225-member legislative assembly, which is the Electoral College for the RS election, the ruling Congress has 123 members, BJP 44, JD-S 40, independents nine, BSR-C 3, KJP 2, SKP 1, KMP 1, speaker 1 and nominated 1.

Election to the four seats were held as scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vidhana Soudha in the state secretariat here after the Election Commission rejected JD-S plea to postpone or countermand following a sting operation on some independents and its lawmakers by two national news channels on June 2.

The election was held to fill the four vacancies caused by the expiry of the six-year term of four erstwhile members from the state, including Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, Fernandes, Aayanur Manjunath and tycoon Vijay Mallya, who resigned on May 4 before his term could end on June 30.

Its good to note that Oscar Fernandes has managed to get into Parliament yet again and congratulations to him for that...
I wish at least now, after so many decades in politics, it dawns on him that he has a moral and social responsibility of building and grooming fresh blood too...
A true leader builds a network of new leaders and steps back to become their mentor said Apple founder Late Steve Jobs...
Maybe Oscar could pull a cue from this one..

what can one expect from people Henry Misquith who want Congress to win only to disrupt parliament. Today their only opposition is to Modi a democratcially elected leader. It does not matter whoever wins even if they do nothing for the state. Then these people talk about intolerance and democracy.

Peter, DKS never ever will give sleepless nights to Yeddy. You cant find a single negative word from Dks to yeddi vice versa. Infact if you remember earlier Yeddy was demanding Dks should be made minister. do you know there was a pact between Dks and Yeddy. Congress voted for Bjp during MLC election and BJP voted their extra votes to Congress todays RS elections. Sabh mile huwe hai jee.

I never knew moideen bava family members all are billionaires.... quite superrich fly. Malya was jds choice last time n this time farooq. Every top leader of jds are billionaires n landlords N have proxy business in every sector. At present AAP is the best party compared to any national or regional parties. people of karnataka must show maturity like Delhi electorates. AAP is expected to win punjab elections. Any politics that is done against wishes of people will suffer natural death. People like Malya farooq n many more get MP tickets easily but common people doesn't approve this type of politics.

Electoral reforms must take place bcz majority members who enter RAJYA SABHA N VIDHANA PARISHATH ARE not fit to be members in first place. Indian democracy had kept nearly 40% members to RS n PARISHATH houses But they don't directly get elected by people. Those whom we elect are playing dirty politics. Some awkward ions are being done for certain categories. If you take out the category of VIDHANA parishat members, one would find some unreasonable choices .... Full of mockery of our system to be frank. It's accommodating certain people in convenient posts. ....
