Kozhikode: An intelligence report has warned of possible Maoist attack on police stations in the hilly regions of Kozhikode district. The development comes at a time when Kerala Police have beefed up surveillance to check the Maoist menace in Wayanad.
It is learnt that the report named eight police stations, namely Valayam, Kuttiady, Thottilpalam, Peruvannamuzhi, Koorachunde, Thamarassery, Thiruvambady and Kodenchery. The regions are easily accessible through forest routes from states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The police stations have been ordered to maintain high alert.
The surveillance to check the menace in the flagged regions is ongoing. The regions are categorized on the basis of risk factors. The first attack by Left-wing extremist groups and Maoists is suspected at Thottilpalam and Peruvannamuzhi police stations. Valayam, Kuttiady and Koorachunde police stations are in the second category. Thamarassery, Thiruvambady and Kodenchery are in third category.
A total of 240 police officials, including those in SI ranks have been deployed for surveillance. Vadakara, Thamarassery and Perambra DySPs have been tasked for surveillance. Adivasi colonies are given more focus. 10-member armed official groups are directed to regularly conduct patrolling in the regions. The surveillance is being conducted round the clock in two-shift format: 8 am to 8 pm and 8 pm to 8 am. The surveillance will continue until further orders, noted the Kozhikode Rural Police Superintendent’s order.
Meanwhile, according to reports, the special arrangement has been affecting normal affairs in the respective stations.
