Chavakkad: The state government has issued a notification fixing the size of ‘Karimeen’ (Pearl Spot) that could be caught from the public water resources. As per the notification, fishing of ‘Karimeen’ smaller than 10 cm is restricted. Length from mouth to the tail is considered while fixing the size of the fish.
‘Karimeen’ is identified as the official state fish of Kerala.
Issuing the fresh notification, the government warned that those who engage in catching juvenile fish will face action including penalty, cancellation of licence and other allowances including welfare fund.
At present, the government restricted fishing of ‘Karimeen’ as per the size.
The government will issue new notification fixing the size of inland fish varieties like ‘Varal’ (snake head), ‘Kaari’ (Cat fish) and ‘Manjakoori’ (Yellow cat fish) soon, informed state fish seed centre in Kollam.
Through the notification, the government aims to assure the quality of the fish seed and regulate the sale and procurement of fish seed.
At the same time, it is complained that ‘karimeen’ fish seed is largely caught from public water resources and sold on industrial scale.
“Karimeen as state fish of Kerala has great demand in the market. Hence, this variety is caught on a large scale. This fish species has been facing exploitation in the state,” said fisheries joint director and state fish seed centre member secretary H Saleem.
Compared to other fish varieties, ‘Karimeen’ has a low reproduction rate.
