Are you ready to take a trip down memory lane and see just how far we've come in terms of advertising standards? From claims that are too good to be true to sexism and racism, these ads will make you shake your head in disbelief.

Ah, yes…women. The fairer sex. So weak and frail that they need a big, strong man to help them with those difficult household chores, like opening a catsup bottle. Alcoa is, of course, offering a super helpful product and, yea, we have all struggled with opening bottles from time to time. But this ad presents that innovative product in such a sexist and stereotyped way that it comes across as offensive…at least it does as we look back at it fifty-plus years later.

She Doesn't Care!...Really?!

Take for example, the Continental Oil Company ad from 1952. Not only does it feature a woman getting sprayed by a water hose and having her clothes soaked, but it also seems to perpetuate the notion that a woman's role is to just smile and be subservient to men. It's clear that we've come a long way since then, where women (and all groups) are depicted as multi-faceted and complex individuals in advertisements.

So, join me in a journey through the past and see just how ridiculous some of these vintage ads were. Get ready to laugh, cringe, and appreciate how far we've come in terms of advertising standards. Keep reading and enjoy.
