Former West Bengal chief minister and veteran CPI(M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharya (79) was successfully weaned off invasive ventilation and then put on non-invasive ventilator support, said the hospital where he was admitted on Saturday with lower respiratory tract infection and type-2 respiratory failure.
Also, CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday visited Bhattacharya at Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata to enquire about his health. After talking to doctors, Banerjee said the former chief minister is in a better condition now.
The hospital in its latest medical bulletin said a CT thorax was done on him in the morning. “Relevant conservative medical management is being continued. His overall clinical status remains stable under close monitoring,” the bulletin said.
Coming out of the hospital, the CM said, “He is in his senses. He waved his hand after seeing me. It seems he has recovered a lot.”
A doctor monitoring the former CM said, “The process of bringing him out of invasive ventilation was going on since morning. The process was completed a little while ago. The next 24 hours are quite crucial. We are hopeful he will manage to pull it off.”
A team of specialists in critical care, cardiology, internal medicine, pulmonology, anesthesiology and endocrinology is keeping a close watch on Bhattacharya.
CM distances from TMC leader’s Buddhadeb remark
Hours after Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh launched a bitter attack on former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who is receiving treatment in hospital due to ailment, CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday distanced herself and her party from his remarks.
In a meeting organised by the Trinamool student union against the Manipur violence, Ghosh said, “Jyoti Basu (former CM) and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya committed genocides in the heart of Bengal. These gangrapes and all…People will not forget their deeds under any circumstances Buddhadeb babu, get well soon but you have to be reminded of people’s sufferings at every step.”
Reacting to this, Banerjee said, “Kunal’s comments are neither mine nor the party’s. Presently, he (Buddhadeb) is sick and I pray to he recovers quickly.”
