LEADER OF Opposition Devendra Fadnavis and his wife Amruta visited Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray at his newly-built home Shivthirth at Dadar on Wednesday.
Officially, BJP described the meeting between Thackeray and Fadnavis as “apolitical”. A senior leader requesting anonymity said, “Fadnavis and his wife visited responded to Thackeray’s invite for a private family lunch. There was no politics.” The MNS spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande also termed the meeting between BJP-MNS leaders as a “private lunch”. Deshpande said, “The MNS president had invited the Fadnavis couple for lunch at their new house. It was sort of house warming lunch.”
Asked if a BJP-MNS alliance was in the offing, Deshpande said, “I am not aware of what exactly transpired at the lunch meet.”
However, insiders in BJP said the possibility of Fadnavis attempting to pull off a poll pact with MNS for coming BMC elections early next year cannot be ruled out. BJP, which finds itself isolated in Maharashtra after Shiv Sena joined hands with Congress and NCP to forge a coalition government, is exploring the possibility of getting MNS on board.
Earlier in the year, state BJP president Chandrakant Patil met Thackeray during his Nashik tour. BJP’s Ashish Shelar and Prasad Lad had also visited Thackersys new home last week. On its part, MNS is also signalling its willingness to embrace the Hindutva plank in coming polls despite Thackeray’s vituperative anti-Modi campaign in the 2019 elections.
