‘Some leaders, channels’ trying to wreck Maharashtra’s unity using caste politics: Raj Thackeray

Speaking during an interview at the 100th Marathi Natya Sammelan in Chinchwad, the MNS chief said he will keep raising his voice to “awaken the Marathi Manoos”.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has criticised attempts being made by certain quarters – allegedly some leaders and television channels – to “destroy the unity of the state” by playing caste politics.

“The caste politics that is being played out today is not running on its own. It is being run by those who do not want Maharashtra to remain united. Some people are making attempts to wreck the unity of Maharashtra,” Thackeray told financial expert and playwright Deepak Karanjikar during an interview at the 100th Marathi Natya Sammelan in Chinchwad on Sunday.

“We are ignorant of what is happening but some leaders and channels are making attempts to shatter the unity of Maharashtra,” he said.

Underlining that it is the need of the hour for the middle class to enter the field of politics, he said, “I will keep raising my voice. I will do it repeatedly. I want to awaken the Marathi Manoos. Today the geography of the Marathi Manoos is in trouble… The middle class will have to enter politics and the social sphere. It is not enough to be educated.”

Lamenting that Marathi artistes do not show respect to each other, Thackeray said, “There is a difference between Marathi artistes and those from other states. Artistes from other states show respect to each other but Marathi actors do not show such regard for one another.”

Festive offer

Raj Thackeray said that if Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar comes before him, he would bow his head and greet him. “That is because he is an elderly person. What I speak on the stage is a different matter,” he said.

Revealing that he was writing a book on the late melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, the MNS chief said, “I am working on it. When I had showed the cover of the book to Lata didi, she had reacted saying, ‘waah’.”
