Eminent writer and veteran social activist Mahasweta Devi on Thursday dies reportedly after multiple-organ failure in Kolkata. The 90-year-old was a recipient of the Padma awards, Jnanpith, Sahitya Akademi Award, and Ramon Magsaysay Award, among several others.
Devi had been undergoing treatment at Kolkata’s Belle Vue Clinic for the past two months. Doctors had reportedly said that she had been admitted with illnesses related to old age. Her condition had deteriorated as a result of blood infection and kidney failure.
Some of Devi’s notable works included The Queen of Jhansi (a biography translated in English), Hajar Churashir Maa (which was later made into a movie), Till Death Do Us Part, among many others.
Born in Bangladesh, Devi moved to West Bengal after the partition. She had pursued her Bachelors in English literature in Rabindra Tagore-founded Vishvabharati University in Santiniketa. Here is how the Twitterati mourned the loss of Devi.
