The Kerala Story actor Adah Sharma recently opened up about a skin condition of hives and shared a health update with her fans on social media. She is going to seek Ayurvedic treatment for the rashes that occurred due to the initial hives and an allergic reaction to a medicine that she took, Adah said through a post on her Instagram handle.

“Thank you to everyone who reached out to me and some of them I haven’t met for years, also Adah Sharma fan clubs,” she said.

Adding a disclaimer about the photos, she said, “Do not swipe if you are scared of rash on skin images, they are a little scary but I thought one should not share only nice photos on Instagram.”

“I’ve been sick for a few days. I had hives, which is a horrible rash. I was hiding it by wearing full sleeves, but it started showing on my face due to stress! So then, I took medicine, and turns out I am allergic to the medicine so it made me nauseous. So now I’m taking another medicine and injection. I will be doing promotions today but my with full sleeves,” said Adah.

Adah further added that she will be opting for an Ayurvedic treatment for her rashes. “I have promised my Amma I will take care of health. Tomorrow I am leaving for a few days. My Amma has told me to focus on health instead of radio trials, zoom interviews, and promo shoot. I will be back soon. Till then I will keep updating scenes from Commando on Instagram,” said Adah.

Reportedly, Adah was rushed to a hospital this week as her health deteriorated considerably.

What are hives?

Urticaria or hives is a skin condition where one experiences itchy rashes which are red and raised swellings on the body. “These can be very uncomfortable and interfere with sleep and daily activities,” said Dr Vandana Punjabi, dermatologist and trichologist at Khar, and Nanavati Max Superspeciality Hospital.

Causes

According to Dr Punjabi, hives are caused by the release of a chemical called ‘histamine’ into the bloodstream. This can happen due to various factors such as certain foods, medications, herbal remedies, stress, hormonal changes, infections, exercise, cold, heat, cosmetics, soaps, insect bites, cancer, environmental factors like pollens, dust, plants, mold etc.

“If the hives persist for more than six weeks, it is called ‘chronic urticaria’ and less than that is called ‘acute urticaria,” said Dr Punjabi.

Sometimes urticaria can be associated with painful swelling around the eyes, cheeks, or lips called ‘angioedema’ which can cause dizziness, trouble breathing, and swelling of the tongue, lips, mouth, or throat. This is called ‘anaphylaxis’ which is a medical emergency, mentioned Dr Punjabi.

Diagnosis and treatment

*Meet a dermatologist who will help you diagnose the condition, find the cause of your urticaria, advise you few blood tests and start you on medications accordingly.
*The most common medications are anti-histamines like desloratadine, fexofenadine, cetirizine etc.
*Use ice packs for the hives and wear loose, cotton clothes.
*Use a calming body lotion containing calamine, menthol, aloe vera etc to soothe the skin.
*Avoid tight clothing and pressing items like watches, belts etc as these will trigger urticaria.
*Stress management is an important aspect that needs to be focussed upon.
