This year Raksha Bandhan will fall on August 30. According to the Drik Panchang, Purnima Tithi Begins will begin at 10:58 AM on August 30th and end at 07:05 AM on Aug 31. Siblings can tie the Rakhi after the Bhadra period ends, as it coincides with the full moon and extends into the first half of the Purnima Tithi. According to Hindu beliefs, the festival holds great historical and mythological importance. In the epic Mahabharata, there is a story where Lord Krishna accidentally cut his finger while using his divine discus. Draupadi, one of the central characters in the epic, promptly used the loose end of her saree to dress his wound. As a result, Lord Krishna promised to protect her forever. He fulfilled this promise when Draupadi faced public humiliation in the royal court of Hastinapur.

Raksha Bandhan has its origins in the practice of territorial or village exogamy, where brides traditionally married outside of their hometown and their parents did not visit them in their married homes. The festival serves as an occasion for married women to return to their parent’s home for the ceremony. Over time, the festival has acquired a symbolic meaning while retaining its widespread popularity. Today, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in a more symbolic manner, emphasizing the significance of the bond between siblings, although it continues to be highly cherished and observed by people.
