Malamel Para | Unexplored Hilltop in Kollam | Eco Tourism

Malamel hills were once under the threat of destruction by the quarry lobby. However, thanks to the perseverance of the local people, they raised their voices against it and eventually succeeded. As a result, the quarry lobby had to step down, and it is perhaps because of this victory that we are able to see Malamel as it is today.

We embark on a journey through the picturesque hilly terrain to discover what makes Malamel truly special. One of the notable features is a narrow, cave-like divide that separates Nadappara (Para is a Malayalam word it means Big Rock )and Nadukanippara. Venturing through this rocky path will surely leave you breathless for a moment. In addition to the stunning view, the cold breeze flowing in from the dense sandalwood trees carries the delightful fragrance of sandalwood and lemon grass that grows in the meadows.

Beyond that lies Malamel, a picturesque hamlet where the sky seems to perpetually meet the land. Malamel is located in the Arakkal Village of Edamulakkal Grama Panchayat, in the Pathanapuram Taluk of Kollam district. The place is bordered by a series of hillocks including Ayiravallippara, Pullakkampara, Ambalampara, Kombukuthipara, Kudappara, Golandarappara, Nadappara, Kochunadukanippara, Nadukanippara, and Shankoothupara.

When you visit the place, make sure to explore the Arakkal Devi Temple and Sankaranarayana Temple, both of which are now managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The locals firmly believe that these temples bring prosperity to the land. The trekking trail starts near the Arakkal Devi Temple.. The road is steep, flanked by sandalwood and other wild trees on either side. After walking 200 meters, you will reach Ayiravallippara. Climb up the rocks, look down, and you will see Anchal, Kulathupuzha, Chanappetta, and Kudukkathupara in the distance.

When you stand here, you will realize why the locals have taken up a protest. The abandoned crusher units disrupt the beauty of the rocks. The next destination is Malamel Sankaranarayana Temple, which is situated on a massive rock known as Ambalappara or the Temple on a Rock. The view from here is a beautiful sight, with nature wrapped in a green blanket and the beauty of the village blending together. However, even here, signs of destruction can be seen.

Long cracks are visible on the rocks, a result of the impact caused by the activities of crusher units in the area. You can take a walk over to Nadappara, which is covered in sweet-smelling lemon grass. The journey to Nadukanippara is quite adventurous. Once you arrive, you will be treated to a beautiful view of the Thankassery Light. Standing atop the summit, you can admire Chadayamangalam, Jadayuppara, and Maruthimala – the rocky hills adorned with lush greenery. It’s no wonder that Nadukanippara is often referred to as the ‘oxygen hub’ of Arakkal Village.

The now-deserted building of the Forest Wireless station, which was burned down by lightning, stands out. The journey continues through paths that have witnessed the presence of pythons and porcupines. It concludes with Kudappara, where rocks are stacked on top of each other, resembling an umbrella shape. Underneath the rock, there is plenty of space for visitors to seek shelter from the rain and sun. Following Kudappara, there is Golarantharappara, which is shaped like a globe fixed on the edge of a needle.

The village is filled with the fragrance of sandalwood trees. Apart from the famous Marayoor in Idukki, which is also a popular tourist spot, this could be the only place where sandalwood trees are naturally grown. Furthermore, Malamel could also be the only place where sandalwood trees are naturally grown in non-forest areas. The fertile soil and suitable climate are likely contributing factors to the profuse growth of these trees. Interestingly, the stories of Puranas and myths of this place are intertwined with the captivating scent of sandalwood.
