Ganesh Chaturthi, an auspicious festival comes once a year for Hindus. On Bhadrapada month, the Chaturthi date of Shukla Paksha is the date on which Lord Ganesha is worshipped.

This wonderful day is actually the birthday celebration of Lord Ganesha, who is also known as Lambodar, Vinayaka, Suk Karta (giver of happiness) and Dukh Harta (remover of sorrow). It is said that Lord Ganesha should be invoked before all the other gods to ensure success in any kind of endeavour.

Ganesh Chaturthi is not held on the same day every year. This year, the festival will fall on August 31.

    Ganesh Chaturthi timings this year
Tithi begins at 3:33 PM, on August 30.
Tithi ends at 3:22 PM, on August 31.

Anant Chaturdashi is the last day for Ganesh Chaturthi, which comes after 10 days. It is also the day of Visarjan. On this auspicious day, the Ganesh idol is bid goodbye by immersing it in water. This is done after carrying Lord Ganesha through the streets of the neighbourhood.

During Ganesh Chaturthi, there is a Madhyana Puja Shubh Muhurat, which comes between 11:05 AM and 1:38 PM.

All devotees are requested to avoid seeing the moon during Ganesh Chaturthi on August 30 and 31. There are timings but best avoid sighting the moon completely for two nights. The reason for not seeing the moon is that you might be falsely accused of stealing something. This is called Mithya Dosh. Lord Krishna was accused of stealing the Samyantaka Jewel as it is believed he saw the moon during Ganesh Chaturthi, and hence was cursed.
