PeeCee Turns 41

Love or hate her, it’s impossible to ignore ‘Desi Girl Extraordinaire’ Priyanka Chopra! Over the course of her career, the diva has delivered some knockout performances. Here are some of her most memorable on-screen outings.

‘Aitraaz’ (2004)

Although this Abbas-Mustan directorial was a cheap knockoff of the 1994 Hollywood thriller ‘Disclosure’, it remains iconic, all thanks to Chopra’s delightfully venomous and unapologetically unscrupulous ‘la belle dame sans merci’ Sonia Kapoor Roy.

‘Yakeen’ (2005)

Chopra proved her mettle as an actress in this Girish Dhamija mystery thriller yet again. As the charming but enigmatic Simar Oberoi who keeps her cards close to her chest, till the very end, she is nothing short of mesmerising.

‘Don’ (2006)

Chopra was electrifying as the smouldering Roma, who is actually an impulsive, trigger-happy girl underneath a carefully composed exterior. At times docile, at times volatile, Chopra’s Roma was ‘junglee billee’ (wild cat) personified.

‘Fashion’ (2008)

Often hailed as one of Chopra’s career-best performances, this Madhur Bhandarkar directorial delved deep into the murky underbelly of the glittery world of fashion and runway shows. As Meghna Mathur, the steely small-town girl who gradually loses her identity in the pursuit of success, Chopra is fantastic.

‘Kaminey’ (2009)

Although this was a gritty action film revolving around mistaken identities, a tender love story between a goofy social activist and a feisty girl was the touchstone of this Vishal Bhardwaj movie. As the loving and fierce Sweety Bhope, who sticks by her man through thick and thin, Chopra is simply fabulous.

‘7 Khoon Maaf’ (2011)

An adaptation of Ruskin Bond’s short story, this Vishal Bhardwaj had a lacklustre box-office performance. However, PeeCee delivered the performance of a lifetime as Suzanna, the ‘Black Widow’, who seeks love in vain, 7 times. At times, sensual, at times menacing and at once heartbreaking, she manages to ensnare you, all the way.

‘Barfi!’ (2012)

This is hands down her best performance. If Ranbir Kapoor was the heart of this Anurag Basu romantic comedy-drama, PeeCee, was undoubtedly its soul. Her Jhilmil, the autistic heiress forms the emotional core of the otherwise lighthearted movie. Chopra is a tour-de-force as Jhilmil, a happy-go-lucky woman, who is well aware of her limitations, but is bitter about being infantalised and overlooked.

‘Mary Kom’ (2014)

PeeCee delivered yet another 10/10 performance in this biopic. The story revolves around Mary Kom, a girl from the hills with stars in her eyes, who eventually overcomes societal taboos to become a renowned boxer.

‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015)

In this Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus, she stepped into the role of Kashi, the loving and devoted wife of Peshwa Bajirao. Although her character is meant to play second fiddle to the leads, she makes you forget the film is not titled ‘Kashibai’. As the demure, wry, self-effacing yet good-natured Kashi, Chopra is the very epitome of heartbreak, muted resentment, and quiet resilience.
