I didn’t think he would stay with me this last weekend. Like every week, he had said he has some work in Bombay. But I insisted he stay and understand what I was doing there. He was reluctant but out of respect for me as his elder, he decided to give me a weekend out of his life. And last weekend, I learned Verghese isn’t very patient, but he does have an illuminated mind.

He does put a smile on my face. Once we got past his initial reluctance, it was like watching a child ogle at a new toy and tinker with a new idea. I think he understands what I am doing here and how it helps dairy farmers in the long run. When I began the cooperative dairy, I did not envision a large growth story. But with Verghese by my side, I have the feeling an enterprise can be brewing.

He doesn’t understand the technology yet. It feels odd because he said he had studied dairy engineering. To have no knowledge about the basics of dairy cultivation is strange. But I really think that is my field of expertise. I will engage him to handle the business and its scale. He seems capable. I believe so even more because of how he spoke to Manoj. Verghese didn’t have to engage the farmer, but he did it and learned extensively about the problems they face and how the KDCMPUL would help him. Empathy is the mark of a true leader. And this leader will be one of the people. One who cares about the welfare of those he empowers.

I need him to stay. If he goes back to America, he will never return. The land of opportunity would gain a diamond and I would have to wait till another enterprising individual comes. I can’t. Now, in an independent state, the nation needs thinking people. Tomorrow will be defined by their vision. Verghese Kurien must stay.
