SPICY KARIMEEN FRY/PEARL SPOT FRY

Karimeen which is also known as Pearl Spot fish or Green chromide is a freshwater fish found in southern India, especially in back waters of Kerala.

Karimeen have an elliptical black body with shiny white diamond like spots all over the body. It is this physical appearance which gave fish the name ‘pearl spot’ or ‘Karimeen’. ‘kari’ point to a dark black colour the fish has a mixed combination of green and black on its body. Dark black strips (usually 8 in number) are found from head to tail. They are mainly found in rivers, ponds, farm fields, canals and estuaries. Karnataka and Orissa are the other major states where karimeen is found in India. The Kuttanad region in Alappuzha district is considered the home of this fishes.

Karimeen fry is one of the authentic dishes of Kerala.  Karimeen is a highly nutritive food along with a good amount of meat Karimeen also includes fat, phosphorus, calcium, ash, iron and water. The fish is acknowledged for high nutritional value, rich aroma, longer shelf life, delicious taste and cost-effectiveness.

Ingredients:-

 

  • Pearl Spot/Karimeen – 4 nos(washed and drained)
  • Lime juice – 3/4 tbsp
  • Oil – As reqd
  • For preparing marinade:
  • Shallots – 4 nos
  • Pepper corns – 4 nos
  • Garlic – 4 cloves
  • Dry red chillies – 4 nos
  • Salt – As reqd

Instructions:-

  1. First make slits on the drained karimeen pieces and smear lime juice over the fishes.
  2. Meanwhile grind together shallots, pepper corns, garlic, dry red chillies and required salt to a smooth paste.
  3. Apply the marinade on the karimeen and keep aside for 1-2 hour.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan and deep fry the karimeen on both sides till golden brown in color.
  5. Serve hot with onion rings and lemon.
