Kowloon Serissa. This is the most heavily variegated cultivar of this species. Leaves will have more white than green and because of its heavy variegation, it grows off much slower than other selections, but it is still rather vigorous. It has small white star-shaped non-fragrant flowers in May and June. This species is used extensively in Japan as a bonsai subject because it is very adaptable to pruning and bending. Formerly, the species designation "foetida" (which has been renamed japonica) alludes to its fetid or stinky odor when its stems or leaves are crushed, although this does not discourage rabbits unfortunately. It does best in filtered sun or morning sun and afternoons hade, and it will reach 2-3' with an equal spread. It is not particular as to soil, as long as it has good drainage.
