Bhojeshwar Temple

Here is the next post from the series “Temples: Architectural Wonders of India”…..

Bhojeshwar Temple is an incomplete temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Bhojpur village of Madhya Pradesh. It stands majestically on the banks of river Betwa. This temple was built by Paramara King Bhojraj. The construction was started in the 11th century AD. It is located approximately 32 km away from Bhopal city. The temple is declared as a Monument of National Importance by Archeological Survey of India. The temple lies on the platform which is approximately 115 feet long, 82 feet wide and 13 feet high, having a huge Shiva Linga.

The Shiva Linga is built by using three superimposed limestone blocks. The Shiva Linga is 7.5 feet high and 17.8 feet in circumference. It is set on a square platform, whose sides measure 21.5 feet. The total height of Linga, including the platform, is over 40 feet. The northern, southern and eastern walls of temple feature three decorative balconies on outer side which rest on the massive brackets. There is also a small museum situated nearly 200 meters from the main temple. It depicts the history of the Bhojeshwar Temple through the posters and sketches. Because of its location near to the capital city of Bhopal, it attracts a considerable number to tourists. In 2015, the temple received the National Tourism Award for the “Best Maintained and Disable Friendly Monument”
