NEW DELHI: Congress leaders lashed out at senior lawyer and a key member of dissident group G-23, Kapil Sibal, for saying that the Gandhi family should step aside from leadership positions and give others a chance, with some critics accusing him of echoing the sentiment of RSS-BJP.
In the wake of the Congress debacle in five states, Sibal questioned the decision of the CWC to turn down Sonia Gandhi's offer to step away from the Congress leadership, along with son Rahul and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
He said the Gandhis should make way for some other party president, even saying that every good innings comes to an end. He also said that he wants "Sab ki Congress", while some want "Ghar ki Congress".
The ginger group is also said to be planning to escalate its activities to press its demand for "reforms".
Retaliating against Sibal, Lok Sabha MP Manickam Tagore, who is considered close to Rahul Gandhi, tweeted, "Why RSS and BJP wants Nehru-Gandhis out of the leadership? Because without Gandhi's leadership, Congress will become Janata Party. It's easy to kill Congress then, it's easy to destroy the idea of India." He added, "Sibal knows it, but why he is speaking the language of RSS/BJP."
AICC spokesman Pawan Khera asked Sibal to contest the coming party elections instead of launching a public attack on the Gandhis, even taking a swipe at Sibal for losing elections in Delhi.
Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot termed Sibal's comment as "unfortunate". He said, "At a time when the party is losing elections, leaders should stand united." Gehlot said Congress is the only party that can take on BJP and praised Rahul for confronting PM Narendra Modi.
