MUMBAI: The transport department has made it mandatory for all autorickshaws and taxis to paste details of driver and vehicle either near the windscreen or on the back of the front seat (in case of autos) for the benefit and safety of commuters.
Officials said that the details should include driver's photo, name, permit details, contact number, badge number, vehicle details such as registration number, etc.
The move will help commuters, who can now get details of driver in case of complaints like misbehaviour and overcharging.
The passengers can also identify the dri ver from the photograph and ensure that only bonafide drivers are plying the vehicle.
A L Quadros, taximen union leader, suggested, “Taxis play in shift and drivers change duties. Instead of pasting the details, one can have a transparent pouch where the driver would put a card with his details when he takes charge of the vehicle.“
The department has decided to set up more e-governance centres--CSC assistance booths--to enable citizens make online applications at an affordable fee. Said an official: “One can go to the nearest e-governance centre for any RTO related online work and get the work done by paying only Rs 20.“
