Word to the wise: Cycle rickshaws are still in operation in Old Delhi, except for on Chandi Chowk, and are generally the best way to traverse Deli's narrow lanes by public transport.
Auto rickshaws (also known as tuk-tuks and autos) are one of the most popular modes of transport in the city, distinctive by their yellow and green paintwork. New auto rickshaws run on compressed natural gas and are more environmentally friendly than their petroleum-fueled ancestors.
An auto rickshaw can seat a maximum of four people (though it'd be a tight squeeze) and can be hailed on the street. Some drivers ask exorbitant fares of foreign visitors, so always insist on travelling by meter, or at least agree the fare before setting off. Even if the meter is broken they should have a laminated sheet of fares by kilometre - ask to see it.
If you find a driver you like and trust, keep him - most drivers nowadays have mobile phones.
