Do you love Kerala? We do, a lot, and for a lot of reasons. It is easily one of the most visited states in the country. One wonders, what makes a place so interesting that it doesn’t matter how many times one visits the place, it always has something new and interesting to offer. Kerala has a variety of attractions to offer, from its beaches, old settlements and backwaters to its hill stations and amazing wildlife, there’s something for everybody.

Village of twins
You will find this village most frequently on the list of strange and unusual villages in India. Kodinhi village in Malappuram district is also known as the Twin Town. The village shot to fame for the bizarre phenomenon of the birth of twins in the village. Don’t mistake us when we say this, having twins is not a strange thing; having twins six times more than the global average is!

Everyone plays chess here!
Where else in India will you find a place where almost all residents play chess? It’s more of a way of life here in Marottichal Village than a game to pass one’s time. It is located in Thrissur district and was initially developed as a place for rehabilitation and recuperation for those suffering from alcohol addiction. In the process, Marottichal becomes the village with the largest number of chess players.

Home to world’s richest temple
The richest temple in the world, Padmanabhaswamy Temple is in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. The temple is one of the most visited sites in the state and being a temple, it also gets a lot of donations from patrons.

Only state with banking facilities and hospitals in every village
Do you know why Kerala is one of the most preferred holiday destinations in India, if not the world? Reasons are plenty, but one of the most basic and important reasons is that in Kerala, everywhere you go, there are hospitals and banks. Meaning, even in the remotest of villages in Kerala, you will find banking and healthcare facilities, two important things tourists are mindful about while travelling.

Kerala has the only drive-in beach in India
The Muzhappilangad shoreline of Kerala is the longest drive-in shoreline in Asia, and the only drive-in beach in India. Visitors come here to experience the unique experience of driving on a beach. The four-kilometre drive is a big hit amongst thrill seekers.

Serving the tourists
It’s no surprise that Kerala is so beloved as a tourist destination. The state takes tourism seriously and they even have a separate wing of the police called the tourism police. This special department comprises police officials, who are trained to interact with tourists in multiple languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, English and French.

First church, mosque and synagogue of India are in Kerala
Kerala is the land of many firsts. For instance, the first church in India – St Thomas, Syro-Malabar Catholic church in Palayur – was established in 52 AD by St Thomas. The first ever mosque in India – Cheraman Juma Mosque in Methala, Kodungallur – was built in 629 AD. And lastly, coming from the Jewish community of Kochi is the Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the state, built in 1567.

Asia's first butterfly safari park, Thenmala
Did you know that Thenmala was the first eco-tourism project in India? Well, now you know. Thenmala also has Asia’s first butterfly safari park, the brainchild of the Kerala Forest Research Institute. At Thenmala butterfly park, there are over 125 species of butterflies, breeding and feeding at the microhabitat created specially for them. There are some rare and endemic species of butterflies here at the park, and you can watch the life cycles of these butterflies. For the butterfly-loving community, this is a haven.
