Krishnapuram Palace In Alleppey

A rare specimen of the Kerala style of architecture, Krishnapuram Palace in Alleppey is a palace-cum-museum located in Kayamkulam Alappuzha district. The structure is complete with gabled roofs, narrow corridors, and dormer windows. Built in the 18th century by the erstwhile Travancore king Marthanda Varma Maharaja, the palace is today a protected monument under the Archaeology Department.

The traditional architecture of this palace attracts thousands of tourists every year. In addition to its architecture, Krishnapuram Palace has a mural depicting the story of Gajendra Moksham (salvation of elephant). Dating back to the 18th century, this exquisite piece of art is one of the largest murals in India and is a fantastic blend of colours and expressions. This 16-block palace is also famous for its museum that houses antiques, sculptures, paintings, weapons, megalithic remains, stone inscriptions, coins and artifacts in bronze.

Situated on a small hilltop, Krishnapuram Palace is surrounded by a terraced garden with fountains, ponds and lawns. The garden was recently renovated in accordance with the scientific techniques prescribed for the protection of heritage monuments.

While there are several statues inside the museum, the one that attracts the most attention is the statue of Buddha kept in a chamber in the garden. This single piece statue is more than a thousand years old. The museum also has a Bible in Sanskrit that dates back to 1886.<READMORE>

The palace and the museum are open between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on all days except Mondays.

The trip was nice. but i would suggest one thing, you should have informed that what the time you pick up us. So we would book the train accordingly. Because our trip started with this issue we arrived the railway station early morning 2.30 but your cab arrived at 8 am. We were new that place. So t

hat time some collapsed happen for us. Otherwise the driver and the trip all was nice. You booked the hotel room for us i munnar that also a little bit disappointed. That hotel has no proper chef. We ordered a food at 8.pm but food came at 10.pm and food was also not that much better.

nce for water cruise and overnight staying in the boat, but somewhat subpar in terms of absence of glitz, paucity of dining options, saltwater supply in bathrooms etc. Do not wish that this feedback be passed to houseboat operators, it is what it is and traveller should understand what they are getting into, that is look beyond how it is marketed. Need to appreciate that after buying the package, not an extra penny was asked anywhere. Do not sleep during the drives from Kochi to Munnar, to Thekkady, to Allepey- or you will miss beautiful forest and mountain scenery!

What is special about the Krishnapuram Palace?

The Krishnapuram Palace is a rare specimen of the Kerala style of architecture. It houses a mural, the theme of which is mythological and depicts an elephant saluting Lord Vishnu in devotion while the other gods, goddesses, and saints look on. This mural was placed at the entrance to the palace from the pond to enable the rajas to worship the deity after their bath.

What other attractions does Krishnapuram Palace have other than the mural?

Other attractions here include the beautifully landscaped garden in the palace compound where you have a variety of flora typical of Kerala, and a newly erected Buddha mandapam, which houses a recently recovered statue of Buddha. There are other collections at the museum including rare bronze sculptures and paintings that visitors take great interest in.
