About Mysore or Mysuru Dasara Festival

  • Mysore Dasara is a Royal Festival Celebrating the victory of Truth over Evil. Legend has it that the Goddess Chamundeeswari or Durga slew the demon Mahishasuran on Vijayadasami day.
  • In Karnataka, Dasara is celebrated as the State festival - known as ‘Naada Habba’ - which is steered by the Royal Family of Mysore belonging to the Wadiyar Dynasty.
  • The royal family of Mysore performs a special pooja during Dasara while the city is decorated and illuminated.
  • Cultural events such as art shows, sports, poetry, food, and film festivals are held in the Palace, attracting large crowds. Dasara Exhibition takes place at Doddakere Maidana by the Karnataka Exhibition Authority.
  • Public and private sector industries, leading businesses, and government departments promote their goods and services through stalls that remain open for months.

About Dasara

  • Dasara is a 10-day festival celebrated in the region, culminating on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami. The conclusion of the previous nine days has been successful, marking its end.
  • Vijayadashami is a day of victory for the king and his subjects, whether in a battle or day-to-day governance.
  • The preceding nine days of Navarathri involve celebrations that begin only after six days. The sixth day is dedicated to the goddess Saraswathi, the eighth day to Durga, and the ninth day to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. On the tenth day, a grand and spectacular procession occurs, starting from Mysore Palace and ending in Bannimantap.

Kota Dussehra Fair (Rajasthan), Bastar Dussehra (Chhattisgarh), Kullu (Himachal Pradesh) Dussehra are also famous in India.

Wadiyar Dynasty

The Wadiyar dynasty (sometimes spelled Wodiyar) was an Indian royal family that ruled over the Kingdom of Mysore from 1399 until 1947.

The dynasty was founded by Vijaya, who renamed himself and took control of Mysuru, which was then just a small town. The Wadiyars belonged to the ArasuWadiyar community of Karnataka, which included other noble clans of the region.

The Kingdom of Mysore remained relatively small during its early years and was a part of the Vijayanagara Empire. After the Vijayanagara Empire fell in 1565, Mysore became independent and remained so until 1799.

Under the reign of King Krishnaraja Wadiyar III (1799-1868), the Kingdom of Mysore came under British control.

His successors changed the English spelling of their royal name to Wadiyar and took the title of Bahadur.
