Comedian Barry Humphries aka Dame Edna Everage can even entertain from his hospital bedside. The star has given fans an update on his concerning health status following 'post-surgery complications' after a hip replacement.

The legendary star, 89, best known as his drag alter ego amused fans with his ever-upbeat style via a statement through his publicist after being re-admitted to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney after an operation.

Humphries told 9News: "Barry would like to thank every body for the support and best wishes he has received but he would like more and more."

According to Aussie's Channel Seven's Sunrise, the comedian is 'comfortable' and surrounded by loved ones, while Humphries wife Elizabeth Spender told 9News he was 'doing fine'.

Aussie journalist Peter Ford said: "At this moment Barry is in a serious condition but being kept comfortable. He's surrounded by family."

Ford said that 'things are tough' and asked people to send their love and support.

"I reckon Barry has a fighting spirit and he's not going to give up easily," he said.

Humphries is 'still finding moments of humour from his hospital bed, despite his recent agony after a fall at his home in February when he tripped on a rug while reaching for a book.

The star had previously hoped he would be well enough to gig again in time for another 'one man show' later this year.

He told the Sydney Morning Herald in March: "I have to get back on my feet... I'm going back on tour later this year. The result of my broken hip means I now have a titanium hip... you can call me 'Bionic Bazza'."

The comedian said his medical bill 'is bl**dy enormous' and strongly advised to 'not break your hip'.

The Melbourne-born star, who lives in London with his wife, has played Dame Edna since 1955.

Get well soon, Barry.
