Devdas Paperback – International Edition, May 24, 2011

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

Devdas is a young man who is in love with Paro. They have been together since childhood, and their love spans their entire life. However, Paro s parents have other plans for her. They want to marry her off to another man, and this marriage will prove destructive to Devdas sanity. His grief, and the story of his drunken stupor as he pines for his beloved Paro, is a classic story that has been told and retold throughout the decades since its first release. This English translation brings out the wonder and tragedy of the original Bengali novel for a new generation of readers.

This is the original Devdas and although I loved the movie, I thought the book was much better. It is a quick and easy read. Some parts are a little hard to read but I think it has more to do with the difficulty of translating it from Bengali than the actual story. The writing does flow very well and some parts are beautifully written (especially the ending). The look into Bengali culture and social norms were interesting. The characters are interesting and somewhat different from the movie. For example Paro in this seems more stubborn and strong headed, while Devdas is more of an anti-hero who is weak and an emotional wreck. Chandramukhi is sweeter and is more humanized. It is a wonderful book, I think if you liked the movie then you will also like the book!

I got this with the movie and the soundtrack, all three at once. As an English major, I have NO IDEA why this wasn't presented to me YEARS ago as a valid international comparison to ... I don't know ... ANYTHING AMAZING?!? It's simply written, yet has incredible depth at the same time. Ask me to explain that, and I can't.
It is different from the movie in several places, some big and noticeable. In most cases, this bothers me. In this case, I love them both for what they are.

I love this book. The book arrived fast enough.
Really enjoyed it!
The book might be a lot different from the movie, but it had a totally different perspective to it.

This novella is a nice quick read. The prose translates really cleanly and the story flows effortlessly. I actually think the cover does the story a disservice as the novella is far richer and better told than the movie and the imagery fo the actors is distracting during the childhood stories. Overall though, highly recommended.

Prepare to be sad and tortured in this star struck love story. It is tragic but in its stark beauty it stands alone. The translation is fairly well.

Good book, just started reading it. Have seen the recent Devdas movie; plan to watch the 50's Devdas movie soon and the newer Dev D movie as well. Book is not very long, (it said in the first few pages its 30,000 words).

It's a good book. Had to get it after watching the movie. I like the cover picture also. I liked both versions of the movie. The original with Dilip especially the new one with Shahrukh Khan who is my favorite actor.

Good Book! I really like how it's character based versus plot based. There's less stuff in the way of the character's development.
