There has been much discussion of this book - plenty of it hostile. I don't necessarily subscribe to all Reynolds' opinions but read it anyway. The fact is that up until the time this book was written, very few professional historians troubled to write about the aboriginal reaction to white invasion of Australia. That was a king-size omission. Reynolds' opinions about this may not be right, but as he was one of the first to try with this topic, his book is important, even if he got it wrong. A better book about this will only be written by somebody who takes the topic seriously. Those who are hostile because they merely don't want to know have very little of relevance to say. At least 50, and probably more than a hundred languages were extinguished in the course of white occupation; and there are still children in Australia who cannot get all their primary teaching in their native language. That is a fact that the historians of education have ignored until now. Time they woke up! White Australia wasn't ever going to happen.

The author, Henry Reynolds, has written this book in a language that everyone can understand. As I stated in regards to his book, The Forgotten War, our schoolchildren, our politicians and future leaders should read this book to understand the real history of Australia. How Australia had frontier wars, not a peaceful transition of welcoming take my lands in my country as depicted in our colonial past and describing the aboriginal people as nomadic people with no interest in ownership of lands. Henry Reynolds explains clearly the frontier wars that occurred in Australia's history. A must-read book for every Australian.
