Allah Rakha Rahman was born as A. S. Dileep Kumar in Madras, Tamil Nadu. His father, R. K. Shekhar was a film-score composer and conductor for Tamil and Malayalam films. Rahman began studying piano at age four. He assisted his father in the studio, playing the keyboard. After his father's death when Rahman was nine years old, the rental of his father's musical equipment provided his family's income. Rahman began his early musical training under Master Dhanraj and at age 11 began playing in the orchestra of Malayalam composer M. K. Arjunan. He soon began working with other popular composers, such as M. S. Viswanathan, Vijaya Bhaskar Ilaiyaraaja, Ramesh Naidu, Vijay Anand, Hamsalekha and Raj–Koti. 

Ar Rahman who is now fondly called as ‘Isai Puyal’ and ‘Mozart of Madras’ initially composed scores for different documentaries and jingles for advertisements and Indian television channels. In 1992 with Mani Ratnam's Roja he has made his debut as a music director. He won National award for his first film itself. Since then, he has became a permanent music composer for all Mani Ratnam's films. He entered into Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela. And since then there is no turning back for Rahman and is still considered as one of the top musicians in North and South Film industries.

The Music Magician has been weaving his magic for the last three decades. He has been honoured with prestigious accolades over the years for his works, including six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award and many more. In 2010 he was conferred with nation's third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan by Indian government. 

Rahman has changed music scenario in Indian films with his new sounding and orchestration. He introduced many new singers and technology to the music world. He is also a humanitarian and philanthropist raising funds and donations for number of causes. In an effort to raise awareness about climate change, Ar Rahman collaborated with other illustrious musicians and artists on a global project titled "Hands Around The World". His son AR Ameen also celebrating birthday on the same day along with his father.
