Beatles to release long-awaited final song ‘Now and Then’ after 45 years in the making
English rock band The Beatles will release a track titled Now and Then, which is being dubbed their ‘final song,’ on Thursday, November 2. This track, 45 years in the making, features contributions from all four members of the band—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

It will be the last officially credited song to the band’s iconic line-up.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, the genesis of Now and Then dates back to the late 1970s when John Lennon first penned its initial bars. Over the years, the surviving Beatles attempted to complete the song during the mid-1990s while working on their documentary series, Anthology.

Alongside two other tracks, Free as a Bird and Real Love, the song was originally recorded by Lennon as a demo with piano and vocals at his Manhattan home shortly before his tragic death in 1980, reported the New York Times. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr worked on these recordings after receiving them from Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, in 1994. However, technical limitations of that era prevented the proper mixing of the home recording of Now and Then, the report added.

Thanks to cutting-edge machine learning algorithms created by a team led by filmmaker Peter Jackson, who helmed the Beatles documentary
Get Back in 2021, McCartney and Starr were able to finish the song in a year’s time.

The release of Now and Then marks a historic moment in the music scene, bringing closure to a song that has lingered in the hearts of Beatles fans for decades. The track, accompanied by a poignant making-of mini-film and music video, will debut on Thursday, November 2.

A video premiere is scheduled for Friday, November 3, at 10 AM ET, precisely 24 hours after the song’s release.

Reflecting on the experience, McCartney expressed his emotions in a press release, saying, “There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear. It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it; it’s a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public hasn't heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”

Ringo Starr echoed the sentiment, describing the process as an emotional journey that brought them closer to the spirit of John Lennon, making it feel like he was in the room with them again.

Now and Then will be released as a double A-side single along with the band’s 1962 debut single, Love Me Do, featuring the original cover art shot by Ed Ruscha. Both tracks were mixed in stereo as well as Dolby Atmos. This release will also be featured in the deluxe expanded reissue of the Beatles’ iconic compilations, the Red Album and Blue Album, the LA Times report added.
