Milind Deora on Sunday, January 14, resigned his primary membership of the Indian National Congress, ending a 55-year-old relationship with the party. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Deora did not give a reason for taking this decision. This comes at a time when Congress is supposedly trying to weave a nationwide coalition of parties that see the BJP-led coalition as a rival.
According to sources, Deora, unhappy with the seat-sharing formula hammered out by the INDIA alliance, will join Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde at 2 pm at Varsha (the official residence of Maharashtra's CM).
Meanwhile, the Congress on Sunday alleged that the timing of the announcement of his departure from the party was determined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said.
The South Mumbai seat became a bone of contention for UBT Shiv Sena and Congress. Congress demanded the seat, claiming that Sawant only won the seat because of Sena's alliance with BJP. And since there is no alliance now, he won't win, and Deora has a shot, the Congress supposedly said. Uddhav's Sena shot back that Sawant could win the seat on his own.
According to sources, during the meeting, Sawant, who had defeated Deora in the 2019 election, and Deora were involved in a heated exchange.
Deora was a member of the 15th Lok Sabha from the Mumbai South constituency and also served as the President of the Mumbai Regional Congress committee. He has held several positions in the party, including the post of Union Minister of State (MoS) for Communications & Information Technology and Shipping in Manmohan Singh's cabinet in the UPA 2.0 government.
The Congress party units in different states, like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, have been struggling with infighting between its leaders.
The Deora family's history with the Congress
Deora and his family have had a long-standing association with the Indian National Congress. His father, Murli Deora, was also a prominent Congress leader and a former Union Minister of Corporate Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas in the UPA 1.0 government. Murli Deora was a Member of Parliament from the Mumbai South constituency for three terms.
The Deora family has been associated with the Congress party for over five decades, and their contributions to the party have been significant. Murli Deora was a close confidant of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and was instrumental in bringing the Congress to power in Maharashtra in 1999.
Deora’s resignation from the party marks the end of an era, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him and his family.. The Congress party has been facing several challenges in recent years, and the resignation of a prominent leader like Milind Deora is a significant setback for the party.
