Ahead of the assembly polls in November, chief minister Sheila Dikshit was out to woo west Delhi residents on Sunday.

In the first of a series of rallies to be held in the election year, Dikshit doled out promises in Uttam Nagar that included better water and power facilities as well as organising a feasibility study for introducing a monorail in west Delhi.

Government officials claimed that more than 80,000 people turned up for the 'mammoth' Vikas Rally on Sunday.

Dikshit was shown black flags by a group of protesters allegedly belonging to the BJP. Parliamentary secretary to the CM and area MLA Mukesh Sharma said 12-15 BJP workers created ruckus and were removed from the rally site by the police.

Addressing the function, Dikshit said even her political opponents agree that there has been a positive change during the last 14 years in the Capital.

She promised that every resident will get piped drinking water and pledged to create a 200-bed hospital in Mohan Garden and a 100-bed hospital in Hastsal.

Dikshit also inaugurated work on a sewerage line in the Uttam Nagar assembly segment. The 200km-long sewerage line will be laid within 26 months at an estimated cost of Rs 234 crore.

After regularising unauthorised colonies, providing them with basic infrastructure is the next step for the government, which has its eyes set on the polls.

"Today water is not reaching the people the way it should reach but we are finding a solution to it and the government promises to provide access to power meter and water in every home in a year or two," Dikshit said.

She added that her government has taken up the task of legalising all such colonies and that no single house will be demolished from now.

"We promise to legalise all the unauthorised colonies and give legal ownership to the people of the houses which they have constructed with their hard earned money," Dikshit said.
