Trainspotting’s Sick Boy actor has been confirmed to play Sir John Major in the next series of The Crown.

Jonny Lee Miller, who is best known for his role as the heroin addict in the hit 1996 film, has been cast as the former Prime Minister for season five of the Netflix show.

Major was the leader of the UK and the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1997, which ran alongside the final years of Princess Diana’s life.

The politician previously served in Margaret Thatcher’s government before eventually taking over as Prime Minister.

Miller has played a number of TV and film roles since his career kicked off in the 1980s.

He is best remembered for playing Sick Boy in the film adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel Trainspotting, which follows a group of drug addicts in Edinburgh.

The 48-year-old Englishman reprised the role in the long-awaited sequel to the Trainspotting film, which was released in 2017.

Filming for the fifth series of The Crown will reportedly begin next month and will take place during one of the most difficult periods of time for the Royal Family.

Imelda Staunton will be taking over from Olivia Colman as the Queen, Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Philip and Dominic West will take on the role as Prince Charles.

Gillian Anderson recently won Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Golden Globes for her role as Major’s predecessor as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
