Thiruvananthapuram District featuring landscape views and tranquil scenes
Visit this southwestern Indian territory for beach relaxation, cultural exploration, mountain trekking or a medical treatment.

Take a vacation in Thiruvananthapuram District in the state of Kerala on India’s southwestern coast for a variety of experiences. The area has mountains and ocean, ancient temples and modern medical facilities.

Visit Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, where you will see devout Hindu worshippers breaking coconuts outside the gates for auspicious wishes. Admire the large, gold Shri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. If you are a Hindu you can enter to see the deity and appreciate the sanctity of this temple that has been active for more than 1,000 years. Nearby, look for East Fort, a remnant of ancient city walls and now the city bus stop and entrance to the Chalai Bazaar.

Close to the center of Thiruvananthapuram, visit Shangumukham Beach, popular for its very wide sands, giant mermaid statue and sunset views. Slightly south in Kovalam are several beaches that offer calm waters and striking views from nearby Vizhinjam Lighthouse. Inland of the ocean, explore the lagoons of mixed seawater and freshwater in Kerala’s backwaters at Poovar Island.

Book ahead to make a multiday trek up the very challenging Agastya Mala trail past streams, waterfalls and tall, buttressed trees. Note that only men are allowed, however.

Thiruvananthapuram is known for its physical and mental health facilities. Choose from ayurvedic centers and yoga ashrams offering traditional wellness methods or modern hospitals providing Western medical procedures at low costs. Medical tourism is increasing in popularity as tourists find they can get excellent health care and an exciting or relaxing international holiday for less than they would have paid for just the procedure in their home countries.

Enjoy the delicious vegetarian meals of Kerala. The sadya is a small banquet of rice, coconut-based dishes, curries and other delicacies served on a banana leaf.

Plan your visit to Thiruvananthapuram District for December through February to avoid extreme tropical heat and monsoons. Fly into Trivandrum International Airport from other Indian cities. In the city, use buses, taxis and auto rickshaw to get around.
