Ice circles in the Two Rivers Harbor

A rather unique phenomenon was captured this past week by Lester Public Library director Jeff Dawson. Dawson is a recognized photographic chronicler of everything Two Rivers (see the library's Flickr page). He was in the right place at the right time last Tuesday, Feb. 7, when he forayed out on the harbor's south pier around 3:30 p.m. The short video has been shared worldwide in the few days since it was published.

WBAY meteorologist Steve Beylon explained the formations when he shared the video on his official Facebook page.

"Ice circles usually form in eddy currents," he wrote. "They can rotate in water that’s not moving. The ice circle lowers the nearby water temperature, causing that water to become more dense than the slightly warmer water around it. The colder, more dense water then sinks and creates its own circular motion, causing the ice circle to spin."
