Case study: In Viet Nam, poverty measured according to the $1.25 per day poverty line fell from 40.1 percent in 2002 to just 16.9 percent in 2008. This meant a fall of 3.87 percentage points each year over six years, or 23.2 percentage points in total. While in 2002, close to 32 million people were living on less than $1.25 per day, by 2008, this figure had fallen to around 14 million – in other words, some 17.5 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty in six years.
