When we say that we wished the walls had ears, we mean it literally in this case. What was once considered the most luxurious house of 1936 and still remains the crown jewel of L.A.’s Holmby Hills, has sold for a whopping $88 million. Built by Robert D. Farquhar, this classic Tuscan styled mansion spreads over 10 acers of land and is believed to have been the center of much scandal and gossip.

21-year-old Marilyn Monroe was said to spend much of her time at the mansion when Joseph Schenck, co-founder of 20th Century Fox bought Owlwood. It was not long before she moved into the guest house while Schenck was still married to his wife. Actor, Tony Curtis bought the home from Schenck, who proceeded to sell it to Cher. After seeing the mansion at a party that Curtis threw Cher immediately fell in love with it and purchased the home from Curtis, with her first husband Sonny Bono. Rumor has it that Cher wanted to leave Sonny but was forced to stay married to him, for the sake of their TV show, the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. And so, they decided to live in separate wings of the mansion.

They later sold the estate Ghazi Aita, a playboy from Monaco who welcomed chatter with his raving parties. A typical cocktail night was enjoyed by Hollywood within the walls of the mansion, were Aita ran a harem of starlets. It was during Aita’s time at the home when gossip was at it’s peak.

With the old-world craftsmanship, spacious rooms, carved moldings and an impressive grand foyer, we wouldn’t have the lavish rumors and gossip any other way. The main residence houses nine bedrooms, ten baths, multiple fireplaces and extravagant chandeliers. The estate also holds two guard houses, a pool, a pool house, fruit trees, fountains and multiple gardens.
