History

The founder of Bangalore Kempe Gowda was the creator of the fort. He wanted to establish a city as mesmerizing as Hampi.  He wanted the charming city to have everything from huge Forts to temples.

In the year 1687, the Mughals took over the fort and leased it to Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar who was the King of Mysore. The fort went through a lot of renovation under Hyder Ali. Then it was ruled by his son Tipu Sultan, under his reign, the fort was attacked by the British East India Company led by Lord Cornwallis. After a fierce battle, the British army successfully captured the fort. A huge part of the fort was destroyed during the battle but it was later restored.

Architecture

The mesmerizing 2 storied fort has an oval shape which is unique in itself. The wooden interior and stonework add up to its beauty. The gate of the fort has beautifully carved motifs that highlight the great artwork done by the craftsmen in those days. The fort has 4 royal rooms, one pleased on each corner of the first floor. It has a hall and beautiful balconies too. This fort has a Ganapati temple too that was constructed in the memory of the daughter-in-law of Kempe Gowda.

It is said that one should proudly carry their scar and this fort stands true to it. On the thick walls of this Fort, you can spot marks of damages caused by the army of Lord Cornwallis.

This Fort is a masterpiece in itself as the structure possesses a thoughtful balance between the use of both stone and wood.
