A well-read, 12 times winner of National Film awards, Rituparno Ghosh gave a lot to the Indian cinema. He was a director, actor, lyricist and writer. It was said that he was one of the very few directors who had a great understanding of the female mind. In his last movies, he addressed homosexuality and gender through his direction and acting. Following a massive heart attack, Rituparno Ghosh died aged 49 on May 30, 2013 in Kolkata.

On his 4th death anniversary, here are some interesting facts about Rituparno Ghosh you shouldn't miss:

1. He earned a degree in Economics from Jadavpur University.

2. His father, Sunil Ghosh, was a documentary film maker and painter.

3. He was one of the openly homosexual people in India.

4. Before starting a career in Indian cinema, he had worked for an advertising company. At that time, he was known for giving one-liners and slogans for ad-campaigns. He got famous for his ability to initiate campaigns in Kolkata, that too in the first language spoken -- Bengali. He is famously known for ad campaigns of Boroline and Frooti.

5. Rituparno got his first break through the advertising company he was working for. The agency was given a documentary on Vande Mataram for Doordarshan in 1990.

6. He was a director and made his first screen appearance in "Katha Deithilli Ma Ku", an Oriya movie.

7. He hosted two celebrity chat shows and was also the editor of a Bengali magazine till his death.

8. He was inspired by great personalities like Satyajit Ray movies and Rabindranath Tagore.

9. He liked watching movies on television because he believed that it can change your response for the movies.

10. He was very well-read and had a library of his own.

11. He won 12 National Film awards for his movies in Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay and Best Direction categories within a time span of two decades.
