Social activist and acclaimed writer Mahasweta Devi, who was admitted to a private hospital for over two months, died of multiple organ failure today afternoon in Kolkata.

Her condition had deteriorated this week and she was put on life support.

Doctors said that she had been responding to treatment last week but her condition worsened again on Monday, following which she had been continually kept on ventilation support.

She passed away at 3:16 pm today afternoon.

WRITER-ACTIVIST HAD A LONG LIST OF ACCOLADES

The 90-year-old, who has been awarded with Ramon Magsaysay award and Padma Vibhushan among others for her notable works, had been suffering from kidney and lung ailments, besides blood and urinary tract infections.

The writer-activist had been known for her dedicated work for the development of tribals in different parts of India.

Devi won the Sahitya Akademi and Jnanpith awards for literary excellence, and the Ramon Magsaysay award and Padma Vibhushan for the political importance of her work as a writer and activist equally.
