Rishi Kapoor in films: Mera Naam Joker to Bobby to 102 Not Out

Just a day after the news of Irrfan's death shocked the nation, Rishi Kapoor too breathed his last on Wednesday, April 30. He was admitted to the HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday morning.

Rishi Kapoor was battling cancer, and since 2018, much like Irrfan. He was in the US for a year long treatment.

Randhir Kapoor told the media on Wednesday night that he was admitted to the hospital due to his health deteriorating. On Wednesday, Amitabh Bachchan confirmed the news of Rishi Kapoor’s demise on Twitter.

As an actor, RIshi was par excellence. Right from his debut in Mera Naam Joker as young Raju, up to 102 Not Out as Babulal Vakharia, Rishi has wowed us with his innocence amd his comic timing every time. Here's looking back at some of his best film.

Mera Naam Joker (1970)

RIshi was introduced as a young Raj Kapoor. Granted the make-up was appropriately done, but his uncanny similarity to the legend, Raj Kapoor was instantly noticed by the audience. Rishi was made for the films, just like Raj Kapoor was.

Bobby (1973)

Rishi's proper debut as a male lead was opposite Dimple Kapadia. A sweet teenage love story that gave us some of the best and still-hummable songs, Bobby established Rishi as a romantic hero.

Raaja (1975)

In the 70s, double role was a trend every hero did at least once. This was Rishi in a double role, he was seen as both Raaja and Inspector Ram.

Laila Majnu (1976)

The epic love story of Laila Majnu on celluloid had Rishi playing Majnu. And he nailed the pathos and madness that this love story demanded.

Kabhie Kabhie (1976)

Here Rishi played Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhi's son, a small role but a significant one. He was the contrast in the film, the young love, versus the matured love Rakhie and Amitabh Bachchan stood for.

Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

In this classic blockbuster, RIshi played Akbar Ilhabadi, the youngest of the three brothers lost in their childhood. Each grew up in different households, becoming friends as adults, realising only later that they were brothers. Vinod Khanna was Amar, the eldest, and Amitabh Bachchan was Anthony in the film.

Sargam (1979)

Sargam gave us the song Dhafli wale, and also made us realise what an amazing dancer Rishi was. We were to get more examples of that in the near future.

Karz (1980)

Another blockbuster Karz saw Rishi as Monty, a reincarnation of Ravi Verma avenging his death in this life. It was a nailbiting thriller with some amazing songs.

Prem Rog (1982)

Prem Rog was about unrequited love, and Rishi portrayed the helplessness and pathos of that beautifully. He may have had the chocolate boy image but with Prem Rog, he proved he is an actor par excellence.

Saagar (1985)

Saagar brought RIshi back together with his debut heroine Dimple Kapadia again. The film also co-starred Kamal Haasan, and it was a huge hit by Ramesh Sippy.

Chandni (1989)

With Chandni, Rishi entered a new genre of films. The 90s era was ushering in, and He was soon to be seen in similar roles like that in Chandni. Nonetheless, Rishi and Sridevi's chemistry was noteworthy.

Bol Radha Bol (1992)

Rishi was cast opposite Juhi Chawla, and revolved around a man from the cities moving to a village for work, only to fall in love with everything about the place. This was also a thriller.

Damini (1993)

This Meenakshi Seshadri starter has gone down history as one of the most powerful films in Hindi cinema. Rishi was seen as Meenakshi's husband, the film also starred Sunny Deol.

Hum Tum (2004)

Rishi was seen as Saif Ali Khan's father in this Rani Mukerji starrer. Though he had limited screen time, he was effective in his role.

Fanaa (2006)

Kajol and Aamir Khan's Fanaa saw him as Zulfikar. The film went on to become a huge hit, and Rishi was loved for his work.

Luck by Chance (2009)

Farhan Akhtar's acting debut, Luck by Chance saw Rishi as the producer Romi Rolly. He portrayed the character to perfection. Juhi Chawla played his wife in the film.

Love Aaj Kal (2009)

In the first Love Aaj Kal Rishi was seen as Veer Singh, the older Saif Ali Khan. This film was later remade my Imtiaz Ali in 2020.

Do Dooni Chaar (2010)

A sweet story about a family who is discussing buying a car. If you haven't watched this one, please do. Neetu Kapoor played his on-screen wife.

Agneepath (2012)

Agneepath saw Rishi as Rauf Lala, a character who was introduced in the remake. Rishi was seen as a menacing villain, something we hadn't seen him do before.

Student of the Year (2012)

Not many mainstream Bollywood actors would risk playing homosexual on screen, but Rishi did in Karan Johar's Student of the Year. The film became a hit as did his character. This was also Alia Bhatt's debut film.

Kapoor & Sons (2016)

Here Rishi was seen as the grandfather who keeps the whole family together. The film also starred Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor, Alia, Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan.

102 Not Out (2018)

Rishi and Amitabh returned, but this time as father-son. Rishi played the son to a 102-year-old Amitabh in this hilarious, yet warm family movie.

Mulk (2018)

Anubhav Sinha's Mulk raised important questions about religion and how our society perceives it. Rishi brought the film to life, with Taapsee Pannu beside him.
