The City of Brampton holds its first-ever community Diwali festival next month.

The city’s first-ever community celebration, Diwali Mela, is planned for Nov. 12 in Brampton.

“We are thrilled to be hosting our first-ever community Diwali celebration,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.

“So many of our residents celebrate Diwali and I am looking forward to coming together as a community to celebrate. Residents are invited to join the celebration and experience the traditions of Diwali, including the dazzling fireworks display.”

Traditionally, Diwali is a five-day celebration that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists across the world.

People celebrating Diwali will illuminate their homes with diyas (lamps) and decorate their floors with rangolis, artwork made of coloured rice, sand or flower petals to bring good luck and prosperity to their families and guests.

The first-ever community celebration in Brampton will include live music and performances from local and international artists, free, family-friendly activities, food vendors, and a 15-minute fireworks show – the largest city-run fireworks display, according to a press release from the City of Brampton.

“I am so excited that the City of Brampton is hosting its first-ever Diwali mela,”  said Harkirat Singh, deputy mayor for the City of Brampton. So many of our community members celebrate Diwali and I look forward to joining them on November 12 for a joyous evening. I encourage everyone to come out and celebrate Diwali in Brampton!”

Diwali Mela is Sunday, Nov. 12 from 4 p.m. at Sesquicentennial Park, 11333 Bramalea Rd.

The event is free, and there will be free bus shuttles to the park from Mount Pleasant GO Station, Sheridan College, Gore Meadows Community Centre and Save Max Sports Centre.
