New Christ Statue Is 16 Feet Taller Than Rio de Janeiro's ‘Christ the Redeemer’

Tourists flock to see Christ the Redeemer tower over Copacabana and Ipanema beaches in Brazil. Now Encantado, a small town in southern Brazil, wants some of those tourism dollars for itself. Encantado has built the 141-foot-tall Christ the Protector statue in order to attract some of Rio de Janeiro’s tourists. The new statue is 16 feet taller than Christ the Redeemer. The organization that began building the statue in 2019 says that makes Christ the Protector “the largest Christ in the world."
