India and Bangladesh are following similar trajectories when it comes to shrimp production and supply: India's rapid switch to vannamei is well documented, and Bangladesh is hoping to follow suit.

However, in challenging economic times susceptible to cyclical price swings, mass producing vannamei, no matter how much cheaper it is, does not hold the key to longevity in the business.

Alex Ninan, chief executive of Baby Marine International, a seafood exporting company based in the south Indian city of Kochi, told IntraFish about the number of smaller seafood exporting companies that shut shop last year because they could not cope with the reduced prices for shrimp that European countries paid in 2012.

"The
