How to Choose Cross Flow Fan for Your Application

Tangential fans or cross flow fans are one of the popular types of industrial fans in use today. These industrial fans are typically used in industrial systems where uniform airflow is required. These fans feature a unique impeller design that offers several advantages that make them an integral part of industrial cooling and ventilation systems. These industrial fans are used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, process engineering units, drying technology, etc. However, the application range of the tangential fan is not limited to the above-mentioned applications. Tangential Fan Construction

Industrial cross flow fans use drive motors, hubs, blades and casings as the main components. Auxiliary components such as bearings are installed for installation purposes.

The main structure of these fans has elongated forward-curved blades mounted on a hub.

The hub is connected to the drive shaft of the electric motor.

The entire motor, drive shaft, blades and hub assembly are enclosed in a volute or housing.

This overall compactness makes it preferred in several industrial applications. Elongated tubular structures are seen in these fans due to their enclosed volute. Therefore, they are also called tubular fans.

How a tangential fan works

When the motor is activated, the hub of the cross-flow fan rotates in response to the rotational motion of the drive shaft. The rotational motion of the hub causes the curved, slender blades to move forward.

Since the blades are bent forward, a balance is created from the hub to the tip of the impeller. This causes air to be sucked in from the inlet section on the volute.

As air enters, it is drawn between the gaps between the blades and propelled forward. Compressed air is then ejected from the volute. Air throughput per output remains uniform and laminar in nature.

How to choose the right cross flow fan

  • Flow Velocity and Flow Resistance

    Airflow rate is an important consideration for any cooling device. Many times, DC fans are used to cool computers and electronic equipment. These devices require lower airflow rates, but higher airflows are required for industrial fire station exhaust applications. Therefore, the airflow rate must be considered. Flow resistance must be equally considered as it affects flow rate. Fans must be selected with minimal obstruction (eg filters, ductwork, etc.) to minimize flow resistance.

  • Operating point/parameter

    Cross flow fans function according to some operating parameters such as back pressure. This is because back pressure and other influencing factors exert pressure on the blower casing, impeller and adjacent bearings. This can cause sudden failure of the cross flow fan. Therefore, the fan selected must be designed for minimal back pressure buildup, consistent airflow, and efficient load carrying capacity.

  • Fever

    Cross flow fans are temperature sensitive, especially brushless blowers. As the heat increases, the risk of damage to the electronics inside the blower increases. Therefore, temperature-centric factors must be considered, such as heat generation, heat dissipation, operating temperature range, storage temperature range, etc. Industrial DC fans must have low internal heat generation and high heat dissipation capabilities.

  • Shock/impact resistance

    Cross-flow fans are installed in mechanical HVAC systems. Harsh environmental conditions, electrical currents, excess atmospheric pressure, back pressure and other external forces can affect the performance of industrial cross flow fans. This can dent or crack the outside and inside of the blower, so the selected fan must be highly impact resistant.

  • Bearing quality

    Bearing looseness and wear are one of the main reasons for the failure of cross flow fans. The bearings are mounted on the base or bracket of the blower. They act as stubborn supports, shock absorbers or vibration absorbers, etc. However, these bearings generate heat when subjected to friction. Friction can damage the bearing surfaces, ultimately affecting the life cycle of the bearing. If the bearing fails, the entire DC fan assembly will collapse, so it is necessary to choose a fan with high-quality bearings.

  • Noise and Vibration Resistance

    Although industrial cross-flow fans are known for their low noise and dust resistance, the occurrence of noise cannot be completely ruled out. Cross flow fans are subject to vibration due to the presence of moving mechanical parts. Vibration creates noise, so the fan design must be resistant to vibration and noise.

  • Design and Dimensions

    Cross-flow fans are used in compact electronic equipment as well as in large industrial HVAC systems. Therefore, the size requirements of these blowers vary from application to application. Therefore, considering the application, it is necessary to choose a cross-flow fan that is suitable in size but compact in design and flexible in design.
