What ties together a design movement originating in Paris, a historic precinct of Miami in Florida, the neighbourhood of Churchgate in Mumbai and vanishing houses in a posh South Chennai locality? April 28 was World Art Deco Day, commemorating an exhibition held in Paris in 1925, which displayed the style that would come to be known as Art Deco. In architecture school in India, we learn a lot about classical Greek and Roman styles, ancient Indian architecture, and of course, modernism. I don't recall if we went much into the 'in-between styles' like this, which we actually see all around us in the fabric of cities: in the houses, hotels, theatres, and even window grills and gate designs. Read more in the blog on how this style traveled to Madras and settled itself as the backdrop of quiet houses and bustling theatres. https://lnkd.in/guDcNEXX #ArtDeco #Architecture #DesignMovement #WorldArtDecoDay #ArchitecturalHeritage #ChennaiArchitecture #UrbanAesthetics #MadrasHeritage
